Glatfelter Insurance Group was founded in 1951 when Arthur J. Glatfelter established his independent insurance agency. Art advocated three fundamental principles:
- Serve as the trusted advisor for the insurance needs of clients.
- Ensure that our clients understand their loss exposures.
- Provide service beyond the expectations of our clients.
These principles remain the cornerstones of Glatfelter Insurance Group.
During the ‘50s and ‘60s, Art successfully built one of the largest regional, full service insurance agencies in South Central Pennsylvania. He also realized that future growth would depend largely on looking beyond traditional markets into areas underserved by the insurance industry.
In 1968, Art discovered that underserved market through a new client – a local volunteer fire department. Since emergency service organizations were largely overlooked by the insurance industry, Art interviewed every fire chief he could in order to gain a solid understanding of their needs. His findings became the foundation of VFIS, the world's leading provider of insurance, education, training and consulting products and services for emergency service organizations.
Based on the successful VFIS model, Glatfelter Insurance Group identified municipalities and developed its second market-leading insurance program in the 1990s. This was followed by a program for water and sewer districts in the 2003. The programs were combined under Glatfelter Public Practice, which also insured schools and two-year community and junior colleges.
In 2000, many hospices were forced to close due to rising expenses and jury awards. Working with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), Glatfelter Insurance Group provided property and liability insurance for provider members. Today, Glatfelter Healthcare Practice insures hospices, home healthcare providers, senior living and assisted living facilities and many other healthcare providers.
In 2012, Glatfelter Insurance Group began offering insurance to religious organizations regardless of denomination or creed. Glatfelter Religious Practice is now the fastest-growing program for churches, synagogues and mosques.
The principles upon which Art built his insurance agency remain the foundation of Glatfelter Insurance Group today, and the manner in which he approached the development of VFIS reflects the standard for every Glatfelter-client relationship: We listen. We listen to our clients to gain a clear understanding of their unique needs and exposures and use our influence and experience to develop practical solutions to traditional insurance problems.
No matter how large we may grow, Glatfelter always remains committed to our clients, our associates and the communities we serve.
